On Sunday June 26th we were treated to some great jazz and a great history lesson by Time Capsule.
Muhammad Abdul Al-Khabyyr directed the quintet through standards from Miles Davis to Coltrane, all the while showing some of his own Miles-like touch on his trombone. Kenny Garrett took it up a notch when he arrived midway through the first song, but the show really took off when we were treated to some historical background on Sayyd Abdul-Khabyyr.
We heard the stories of what it was like for Abdul-Khabyyr and wife as a mixed couple to venture out socially onto Montreal scene..
He has performed with Miles Davis, Coltrane, Gillespie, Tony Bennett and a host of other well known jazz greats but has been slowed somewhat in his later years from the results of 2 strokes. These days his time is being spent as a generous humanitarian; feeding the homeless and spending time with sick children. A touching moment was when his family brought him on stage to a thunderous applause.
It was a great evening of jazz, nostalgia and a bit of Montreal history.
